A resort on a small island is usually its own utility company. Power, water and waste are produced and handled on site, which shapes both costs and guest experience.

Power is generated locally

Islands beyond the reach of a mainland grid rely on generators, increasingly paired with solar arrays and battery storage to reduce fuel use.

Fuel arrives by boat, and the cost of delivery to a remote island adds substantially to a price that is already exposed to global markets.

This is why air conditioning policy, lighting design and pool heating receive attention at island properties that mainland hotels never give them.

Fresh water is manufactured

Small islands rarely hold a groundwater lens large enough to support a resort, so most produce fresh water by desalination.

Reverse osmosis pushes seawater through membranes at high pressure, which consumes a significant share of the island's generated electricity.

Water and power are therefore the same problem, and a guest running a long shower is drawing on the generator as much as on the sea.

Waste has nowhere convenient to go

Sewage is treated on site, and treated effluent is typically used for irrigation because discharging near a reef is both regulated and self-defeating.

Solid waste must be separated, compacted and shipped back to the mainland, at a cost per kilogram that makes packaging a genuine operational concern.

Bans on single-use plastic at island resorts are usually presented as environmental policy and are also a direct response to shipping costs.

Redundancy is not optional

A generator failure on an island is not an inconvenience but a service interruption with no external supply to fall back on.

Properties therefore run duplicate generators, spare desalination units and stocked spare parts, all of which sit idle most of the time.

That idle capacity is a permanent cost carried by every room rate, and it is one of the clearest reasons island rates exceed comparable mainland properties.

What guests notice and what they do not

Visible signs include limited hot water at peak hours, drinking water bottled on site and a plant room humming somewhere behind the staff village.

Less visible is the planning behind it, with consumption per guest tracked closely and design decisions made years earlier around expected occupancy.

Properties that manage these systems well are usually the ones where the systems are never noticed at all, which is the entire objective.
